The inspiration of the cocktail was attempting to be unique with coffee liquor. As coffee was the required flavor I started with what went well with coffee - dark chocolate. I added cherry as a third flavor, thinking about the dark chocolate and what would go well with that. Some trail and error and Cognac entered the cocktail. I needed to cut down on the coffee liquor, which was dominating the drink, and it was on hand I tried it out and it rounded out the drink.
