Needle in the Strawbird is an edgy drink inspired by real events. Back in 2018 in my home state of Queensland, mass hysteria overwhelmed Australians when needles were found in strawberries sold at supermarkets. People were throwing away tonnes of strawberries and nationwide recalls of th fruit decimated the strawberry industry.
My macabre curiosity led me to design this drink which pays homage to this strange pocket of history and reclaims the iconic symbol to celebrate the wonderful fruit.
The Needle is inspired by the Junglebird cocktail. While largely bitter, Campari has a subtle fruitiness which I wanted to enhance. The infused Campari balances the bitterness, and with the strawberry flavour, allows a striking fruitiness in the Mr Black to be brought out. A final touch of Jamaican rum rounds up the drink nicely.
Add all ingredients to a shaker.
Add ice and shake for 10-15 seconds.
Double strain into a chilled rock glass with 1 big clear ice.
Garnish with a strawberry using toothpicks, piercing both sides.
1 Cup of strawberries (Sliced )
1 Cup of Campari
Let infused for 24hours, strain but don't squeeze the strawberry to keep the Campari from becoming too cloudy
1 Cup of strawberry (sliced)
1 Cup of sugar (white)
1.5 cup of water
1. Put all ingredients into the pot and cook on medium heat until the solutions turns red and the strawberries loses a lot of the colour.
2. Take it off the stove and let it cool.
3. Strain and bottle it (don't muddle/squeeze the strawberry to keep it from becoming cloudy)
